currant species [+/-]
Enviroment
Currants prefer high rainfall. Up to 1 inch per week is recommended throughout the grow season. Drought will encourage the leaves and fruit to drop prematurely.

Cool summers are preferred. Exposure to full sun, along with consistent temperatures around 90F or higher, can cause damage to the leaves and fruit. While currants perform best in full sun, they do quite well in partial shade if there is enough air circulation to prevent disease.
Pollination
Ribes rubrum and Ribes odoratum (Ribes aureum var. villosum) currants are partially self-fertile. Ribes nigrum "black currants" are usually self-sterile.
Soil
preferred pH: 5.5 to 7. Saline soils are not tolerated.
Other
When it comes to fresh eating, many black currant cultivars have a very pungent flavor most people may not care for. However, black currant jam, including those made from the most pungent cultivars, is often considered to be one of the best.

The fruit of White Imperial develops a good, unique flavor and are less acidic if they are exposed to the sun as they ripen. I don't want to say they taste like grapefruit, because they don't, but there is something about it that reminds me of them. On the negative side, they are somewhat astringent, but it's very much tolerable, in my opinion. Overall, one bush is more than enough for me, especially since they are quite productive.
