Almonds are native to the Mediterranean climate of the Middle East.  Ukrainian almonds were bred in Crimea, an area that receives less than 2" of rainfall per month during the grow season.

Almost no one grows almonds in the US outside of California, so there is very limited information about the different varieties.   One of the reasons for this is that they bloom very early, around the time of apricots, and possibly even a few days before them, making them highly susceptible to frost damage in the majority of the country.   Ukrainian almonds (as well as almond x peach hybrids) bloom a week or so later.

Another problem that prevents people from growing almonds appears to be high susceptibility to various diseases, some of which are apparently serious problems even in the Mediterranean climate of California.   All common almond cultivars seem to have some sort of susceptibility to all (or most) major almond diseases (such as alternia leaf spot, almond scab, bacterial spot, anthracnose, and various kinds of canker), as far as I can tell.   Almond x peach hybrids have some resistance to at least a few of them, and considering Ukrainian almonds were bred in a region that experiences some rainfall throughout the grow season, they may have some resistances as well.
